About

LEE Tal is a South Korean installation artist who explores the subjective reasoning of individuals operating within contemporary ideological structures and systems. Drawing from philosophical concepts such as Louis Althusser’s ‘interpellation’ and Jacques Rancière’s ‘intellectual emancipation,’ he visualizes invisible power dynamics through kinetic installations and media apparatuses.

His work reconstructs everyday landscapes and information into mechanical metaphors, inviting viewers to experience the ‘Schwelle’ (threshold)—a liminal space between reality and distortion. By deconstructing dominant ideologies, LEE Tal prompts a critical re-examination of the self and the social constructs that define modern existence.

Artist  LEE Tal: Artistic Practice and Statement

My artistic practice originates not within, but beyond Rosalind Krauss’s ‘expanded field’—at the precise failure points of the Symbolic Order. My work is a philosophical tool that probes the points of failure in the Symbolic Order constructed by ideology, and it originates from the fragments of traumatic Reality—the Sediment of tragedy that has existed in humanity since before recorded history, which remains unhealed and impossible to symbolize. I outright reject Immanuel Kant’s core aesthetic demand for Disinterested Satisfaction (Interesseloses Wohlgefallen), pursuing instead the aesthetic of The Cruel Sublime that captures the shock of real-world suffering and tragedy. While the Kantian Sublime expands the subject through ‘reconciliation with transcendental reason,’ my Cruel Sublime is an ‘ethical catastrophe wherein the blade of the Real lacerates the Symbolic Order, and the subject, by acknowledging its own ruin within that rupture, awakens.’ It is not a reconciliation, but a co-existence with the awakened wound. My declaration is clear. To discuss the Ergon, which has been regarded as the essence and purity of the artwork, I actively appropriate all non-aesthetic interest (Interesse) and the peripheral element, the Parergon, which have been previously dismissed as secondary, as the core driving force of my work. This appropriation is executed in three ways: It parergonizes the Material (the use of abject matter and electrical resistance); Second, the Parergonization of Place (elevating peripheral spaces like school gates and public squares to the core of the work); Third, the Parergonization of Knowledge (revealing the exclusionary structure of knowledge by rendering text illegible). The common tactic of this triple strategy is to construct a ‘Minefield of Perception’ that leverages the debris excluded by the Ergon. Abject matter, peripheral spaces, illegible texts—all act as mines planted in the ‘ordinary mode of perception’ upon which the viewer unconsciously relies, forcing a collapse of familiar cognitive trajectories and compelling a collision with the Real. The world is a realm of solid metaphysical structure, but my work is an act of fragmenting and dismantling this rigid structure, summoning the chaotic, frenzied uncertainty remaining in the debris of the micro-world—the Formless (Non-Form) itself, which is the dimension of sub-metaphysical Reality. In particular, my work aims to be a critical response to the ‘Coloniality of the Machine,’ where technology and media enforce a specific gaze as the universal standard.

The dark, disassembled forms manifested in my early painting <Libido> (1992) and installation <War Game> (1992-1993) forewarn of Freudian primary drive and the material chaos of the body, forming the genesis of my installation practice. This work leads to a Practical Parergon Aesthetic that intentionally collapses the boundary guaranteeing the autonomy of aesthetic judgment. By moving beyond the boundaries of pictorial representation and dealing directly with the materiality of trauma, I liberate the realm of art from the pure Ergon. I perceive the body and the wound as a relationship between host and parasite, and I grasp the act of dismantling the scar (fact) left after a wound (the Real) is healed into the structure of memory as the essence of art. In this process, the irreversible wounds etched onto the body by the violence and trauma of Korean modern history are not merely subject matter; they function as the most fundamental, formless Reality that generates the work’s momentum. This traumatic Real is directly connected to the ‘pro-Japanese historical view’ mobilized by pro-Japanese forces to maintain power after liberation, and the formation of a strong anti-communist ideology that became the sole legitimacy (Ergon) of state power. Therefore, the trauma of Korean modern history is not simply the painful history of one region, but a ‘Preemptive Model’ that most clearly condenses and shows the universal ways in which global capitalism and the techno-ideological machine intervene in the human body and mind. (That is, a sample that allows us to experience in advance what the final form of the global system will look like.) Korea thus serves not as an exception, but as a concentrated locus where the global logic of techno-capitalist ideology becomes hyper-visible. My work foresees future universal suffering in the present by dissecting this model.

My work proclaims that the expanded field, accessed through the Parergon, is ultimately a device that dismantles the boundaries of the ideologically institutionalized body and constantly invokes the Real outside the Symbolic Order. <The Name of the Rose> (1995) performs the ‘Archaeology of Knowledge’ through the combination of a text-inscribed pillar box and an old sewing machine, visualizing the paradox of the Parergon. Like the work’s declaration, “Text is the cemetery of imagination,” it reveals that knowledge and history are not fixed truths but products of a process repeatedly sealed and recorded by power, and it is a core practice dealing with the Semiotic Rupture that occurs when the Signifier loses its ‘taken-for-granted’ connection to the Signified. Furthermore, the massive installation of raw flesh in <The Ten Commandments> (2003) is a sub-metaphysical Parergon necessarily summoned to expose the purity of the metaphysical Ergon of sublime moral law. This abject flesh is a device that reveals the power of non-human existence that stands independent of moral interpretation. This Abjection dramatically embodies the truth that beauty (Ergon) is paradoxically constituted by the impurity (Parergon) it sought to exclude and conceal, ultimately subversively redefining the very boundary of ethical judgment that is the sublime moral law. My aesthetic conviction that the most sacred can only be exposed through the most abject, the Parergon, is realized here. This abject matter ethically resonates with the political debris of indigenous social reform movements in Korean modern history, which were designated as ‘abject matter’ and violently excluded by state power. This practice reveals the fragmentary structure where the subject’s presence is absent within the discontinuity where ‘only fragmentary and repetitive wounds are remembered.’ Moreover, <Exposing the Diseased Body> (1999–2000) intentionally transgresses the aesthetic boundary of the ‘normal body,’ exploring the possibility of shaking organic organization through disease and opening a new flow toward the Body without Organs (BwO).

My later work leads to conceptual resistance against the algorithmic interpellation of modern society, where ideology has transformed into the system itself. The body distorted by the ‘bulge land’ effect repeating simple movements in the <Saemaul Undong> (2007) video exposes the automatic discipline etched onto the body by state ideology, showing that this repressed body ultimately yearns for BwO, Deleuze’s Body without Organs—the resistant ‘flow’ itself—which remains uncaptured by the system. The analysis of the ideological machine culminates in <The Populace Machine> and <Ideological Machine> (2021). <Ideological Machine> visualizes Althusserian interpellation and ideological circulation, exposing that ideology is an autonomous machine operating as the system itself beyond the subject’s intention. Korea was a ‘laboratory’ that experienced the condensed trajectory of Western modernity in a short period. The operating mechanism of the ideological machine excavated in Korea becomes a Predictive Model that preemptively shows the ‘new colonization’ process that global capitalism and technological hegemony are carrying out globally. My work visualizes the universal form of oppression that has not yet been fully realized elsewhere, through this ‘Korean Model.’

My art extends beyond media and kinetic installations to encompass performance practice and social practice through the collective ‘Munhwa Surigong’ (Cultural Repair Worker), shattering the dichotomy between Poiesis (productive activity) and Praxis (ethical action) articulated by Aristotle. As ‘Munhwa Surigong,’ I elevate art to an active labor that diagnoses and practically reassembles destroyed and alienated social institutions. If Thomas Hirschhorn’s ‘Bâtiment’ constructs a temporary plaza of knowledge, my practice and that of the collective ‘Munhwa Surigong’ is an attempt to permanently rewrite the ‘broken code’ of social institutions themselves. It is not a one-time temporary bridge, but a dimension that constructs a sustainable infrastructure of discomfort. Practices such as the ‘School Gate Replacement’ Project directly perform the ‘Redistribution of the Sensible’ that crosses physical space, bodily experience, and unconscious perception. Here, the work’s main medium, electricity (電氣), is interpreted as the other name for resistance (Résistance), based on the ‘resistance value’—the force that impedes the flow of electrons. The exploration of ethical connection with the Other is maximized in <Black Balloons, or the Illegible Bodies>. This work squarely rejects the arrogance of representation that attempts to interpret and define the suffering of the Other through text that becomes illegible, proclaiming The Ethics of Unreadability. The black balloons expand and contract, causing a physiological anxiety synchronized with the audience’s breathing. By not hastily semiotizing pain, I choose the most fundamental practice that instead induces a Levinasian ethical response to the existence of the Other. <The Chapel of Memory-Plaza> redefines the public square as an ideological apparatus. This work shows that the infinitely open forum is paradoxically made the object of countless intersecting gazes and surveillance through six cameras and monitors, subverting Rancière’s audience theory which assigns the subject a specific role and defines them as ‘one who is seen.’ These public art practices have been a continuous effort to dismantle the architectural boundaries and collective memory systems territorialized by power, building a borderless public sphere where civic communication and ethics are generated. My work translates the concept of the ‘Middle Voice,’ a structure where the result circularly returns to the agent, blurring the boundary between subject and object, into an artistic language. This Middle Voice force is the process of realizing that ‘the recognition of the Other’ is immediately ‘the self-awareness of myself,’ and it is an ethical stance that confesses that the moment I look at the Other, I too am a trembling, connected being.

My artistic practice strongly testifies to the end of Kantian autonomy and the beginning of ethical responsibility through the aesthetic of context. My practice and that of the collective ‘Munhwa Surigong’ elevate art to an engineering system of ‘diagnosis, repair, and reassembly.’ I appropriate the Parergon not merely as a periphery, but as an active device that reassembles the agency of the oppressed Real within the systemic debris. This ‘Self-Parergonization’ movement means that my practice can never be a ‘solution.’ It is an eternal flight that, after destroying one Ergon, prevents a new Ergon from emerging in its place by constantly demoting itself to a ‘problem,’ a ‘discomfort,’ an ‘object to be dismantled.’ The final object of repair for Munhwa Surigong is itself. This appropriation, starting from historical trauma, evolves into an ethical Meta-Praxis directed towards the symbolic order of data constructed by the ‘Coloniality of the Machine’ and the ‘Algorithmic Sublime’ today. If the 20th century was the architecture of the Ergon, the 21st century is the era of living with the Parergon as a weapon amidst its ruins. The Appropriation of the Parergon: this is our time’s most necessary response to the ideological machine. “Art is no longer an aesthetic object. It is the revolutionary tool of Munhwa Surigong, diagnosing the errors of the dominant Symbolic Order and repairing human dignity.”

LEE Tal

Artist’s Statement

God constantly descends in human form, taking the place of the cross. As long as God exists, the succession of the cross will not cease. It is only through this blood-stained crucifixion that humanity is resurrected by God. This is my contemplation on the ominous ‘yin energy’ (eumgi, 陰氣) that lives within the human body, and on original sin, which is passed down through generations.

Text is an imaginary tomb.“

Just as fabric is created by weaving horizontal weft threads with vertical warp threads on a loom, the world is like a quilt woven vertically and horizontally, much like these threads. In this way, the world forms different shapes through narrow or wide vertical and horizontal gaps. Sculpture builds vertical forms upon a horizontal pedestal, and painting visualizes the vertically and horizontally entangled world as a macroscopic world (sigye, 視界), formalizing only the verifiable world. In contrast, the disorderly left microscopic world (misigye, 微視界) is the universe itself, which I call the unformed.

My work is an act of infusing new sensations into these wide or narrow empty gaps by segmenting or deconstructing the relationship between the vertical and horizontal. This is an attempt to create cracks in humanity’s formalized structures, and as a result, my work becomes the very essence of the disorderly, frenzied, and uncertain unformed itself.

Tragedy has existed for humanity since before history was recorded. Wars, disasters, oppression, and violence are common events that humans perceive as tragedies. While these events are accompanied by sorrow, they are overcome through healing. However, unhealed events remain as sediment. Sediment, like undigested food residue, is what I have utilized as a motif in my work.

Humans invariably cause tragedy, yet paradoxically, it is the destiny of contemporary artists to question the essence of human existence trapped within tragedy. Therefore, my work extends beyond discourses on art forms such as video, installation, painting, and photography, contemplating how to transfer (轉移) and record universal human issues through art.
